XP Level Calculator

How long you actually have to stand at the farm to reach a level. Java Edition 26.2.

Level 0 to 30

10 min at the farm

That is 1,395 XP, or about 140 blazes, on a blaze farm running at 800 blazes/hour.

Blazes drop 10 XP each, double most hostile mobs, which is why a blaze farm is the standard XP build.

Why the last levels hurt

The XP curve is piecewise, and it steepens twice: once at level 16 and again at level 31. Getting from 0 to 30 costs 1,395 XP. Getting from 30 to 50 costs 3,950 XP, which is 2.8 times as much for two thirds as many levels. This is why level 30 is the usual stopping point: it is the top enchanting tier and the last cheap level.

Reaching level 30 from scratch takes 1,395 XP in total.

Build the farm

These estimates assume a farm that actually works. If yours is underperforming, or you have not built one yet:

How Minecraft levels actually work

Minecraft does not charge a flat amount of experience per level. The cost curve is piecewise, with two step changes, and that is the single fact this calculator exists to make concrete. Going from level 0 to level 1 costs 7 experience points. Going from level 49 to level 50 costs 283.

The three bands, as published on the Minecraft Wiki for Java Edition:

  • Levels 0 to 15: each level costs 2 × level + 7
  • Levels 16 to 30: each level costs 5 × level - 38
  • Levels 31 and up: each level costs 9 × level - 158

The practical consequence is that level 30 is where most players stop, and it is not arbitrary. Level 30 is the top enchanting table tier, so it is the last level that buys you anything new at the table, and it sits right at the point where the curve turns expensive. Reaching level 30 from scratch costs 1,395 XP. Pushing on to level 50 costs a further 3,950, nearly three times as much for two thirds as many levels.

Where the time estimates come from

Two numbers go into every estimate: the experience each kill drops, and how many kills your farm produces per hour. The first is a fixed game value and the calculator uses the published figures: blazes and guardians drop 10 experience each, most hostile mobs (zombies, skeletons, creepers, endermen) drop 5, and smelting gives 0.7 per ore.

The second number is the honest weak point of any calculator like this one. Mobs per hour depends entirely on how your farm is built, where it sits, and whether the chunk stays loaded. The rates offered here are mid-range figures for a working farm, not guarantees, which is why there is a field to enter your own. To measure it, stand at the farm for five minutes, count what lands in the chest, and multiply by twelve.

One thing the estimate deliberately does not model: mob caps. If you have other farms running or you are near a spawner-heavy area, your farm competes for the same mob cap and will run slower than its own maximum. A mob switch is the usual fix, and it is the single biggest rate improvement available to most players.

Which farm should you build

For raw experience, blaze farms and guardian farms lead because both mobs drop double the usual amount. A blaze farm is easier to reach early: it needs a Nether fortress spawner and no water work. A guardian farm out-produces it once built, because an ocean monument gives a far larger spawning volume than a single spawner ever can, but draining a monument is a serious project.

Enderman farms drop only 5 experience per kill, yet they often beat both on throughput, because the End has no competing spawns to steal the mob cap. If you already have End access, that is usually the fastest route to level 30 in practice.

The XP farm guide ranks every source with build instructions, and the mob spawner optimizer works out the AFK position and spawnable area for a specific build once you have picked one.

Frequently asked questions

How much XP is level 30 in Minecraft?

1,395 experience points from level 0. That is the total, not the cost of the thirtieth level on its own, which is 107 points.

Why does levelling slow down so much after 30?

The per-level cost formula changes at level 31, from 5 × level - 38 to 9 × level - 158. Each level past 30 costs almost twice what the same level would have cost under the previous band, and the cost keeps climbing linearly from there.

What is the fastest XP farm in Minecraft?

By experience per kill, blaze and guardian farms at 10 each. By total throughput, a well-built enderman farm in the End usually wins despite dropping only 5 per kill, because nothing else competes for the mob cap there.

Does Looting or Fortune increase XP drops?

No. Looting increases item drops and Fortune increases block drops, but neither affects experience. The only way to raise experience output is to kill more mobs per hour.
