Every other farm on this site automates something that reproduces: a mob that respawns, a crop that regrows, a villager that breeds. Amethyst does none of that. A geode generates once, when the chunk is created, and the budding amethyst inside it is the only thing in the game that can grow amethyst clusters. You are not building a system that creates a resource from nothing; you are building a piston rig around a resource the world already placed, in a location you do not get to choose. This guide targets Minecraft 26.2 Java Edition and is a spoke of the farm guides hub.
The one fact that decides everything
Budding amethyst cannot be obtained in Survival, not even with Silk Touch. Mined normally it drops nothing, and a Silk Touch tool does not drop anything either; the block is simply destroyed. This is stated directly on the wiki's budding amethyst page, and it is the single most important thing to know before you touch a geode.
Because budding amethyst cannot be picked up, moved, or duplicated, the geode you find is the only geode you get. You cannot relocate a farm the way you can dig up a spawner cage or bucket a mob. Every design decision below exists to avoid accidentally breaking budding amethyst blocks, because doing so deletes farm capacity permanently.
Amethyst cluster growth, stage by stage
A bud only ever grows on a budding amethyst block, and only on a face that has air or still water adjacent to it (Bedrock also allows flowing water, consuming it in the process). Growth passes through four named stages, wiki terminology exactly:
- Small Amethyst Bud
- Medium Amethyst Bud
- Large Amethyst Bud
- Amethyst Cluster (fully grown)
Progress is driven by random ticks, the same system behind crop and cactus growth: each random tick a budding amethyst block receives has a 20% chance of advancing one of its bud faces to the next stage. The wiki's own estimate for one full six-face budding amethyst block to mature every face is roughly 2 hours and 16 minutes at the default random tick speed. That number describes one block with buds on all six sides progressing independently; it is not a per-shard production rate, and the wiki does not publish one of those, so this guide will not invent one either.
Only the final stage, the Amethyst Cluster, is worth breaking. Small, medium, and large buds drop nothing when broken, with or without any enchantment. Breaking one just erases progress toward a cluster; a farm that fires early is a farm that destroys its own future output.
Does bone meal work on amethyst?
No. Bone meal has no listed effect on budding amethyst, buds, or clusters anywhere on the wiki's bone meal page. Amethyst growth is random-tick only, with no player-triggered acceleration. If you have seen a claim that bone meal speeds this up, it is wrong; do not waste bone meal trying.
Drops: cluster only, and only fully grown
A fully grown Amethyst Cluster broken with a pickaxe and no Fortune drops 4 amethyst shards. Broken by any other means (hand, a different tool, an explosion) it drops 2 shards. Fortune raises the average:

Silk Touch changes what drops entirely. A Silk Touch tool makes the cluster drop itself as a placeable block, at whatever growth stage it was in, rather than shards. That is useful for relocating a cluster for decoration, but it does not give you shards, and it does nothing for budding amethyst underneath it, which still drops nothing regardless of tool.
Geode structure and where to find one
A geode is a hollow, roughly spherical structure with three layers, outside in: an outer shell of smooth basalt, a middle shell of calcite, and a hollow interior lined mostly with amethyst blocks, of which about 8.3% are replaced with budding amethyst blocks instead. The budding amethyst is scattered through that inner shell, not concentrated in one spot, so a harvester has to cover the whole hollow rather than one face.
In Java Edition, geodes generate between Y=-58 and Y=30, and each chunk has roughly a 1 in 24 chance of attempting to generate one (not every attempt succeeds). You find geodes by mining through that Y-range and recognizing the basalt shell, or by scouting with a structure locator command in Creative before committing to a Survival build.
The build: piston per cluster
Once you have a geode, and have carefully cleared the basalt and calcite shell without touching the budding amethyst inside, the farm is straightforward:
- Identify every budding amethyst block inside the hollow. Mark them; these are permanent, so treat this as a survey, not a guess.
- Leave the air or water space in front of each bud face clear. That space is where the bud grows into, and where a piston needs line of sight to reach the finished cluster.
- Place a piston facing each cluster position, close enough that extending it breaks the block in that space and drops its item, which for a fully grown cluster means shards.
- Wire the pistons to fire on a timer or pulse, slow enough that clusters have time to reach full growth between activations. Firing faster just wastes cycles breaking nothing, since only the final stage drops anything.
- Collect underneath. Water streams or hoppers below the geode's interior catch shards as pistons knock clusters loose, funneling toward a central hopper line.
Never place a piston where extending it would push into or displace a budding amethyst block itself, only the cluster growing in the air space in front of it. Piston builds that are laid out sloppily around a geode's curved interior are the most common way players accidentally destroy budding amethyst mid-build.
Flying-machine harvesters, and when they earn their keep
A small geode with a handful of accessible buds is easily served by fixed pistons, one per cluster. A large geode with budding amethyst scattered across a wide hollow is a different problem: dozens of piston heads pointed in every direction is a lot of redstone for a build most players open occasionally. Some builders instead route a flying machine, a self-propelled block of observers and pistons, through the geode's interior on a slow loop, breaking clusters as it passes. It is worth building when the geode is large enough that a fixed piston per cluster means a genuinely ugly redstone install, or when you want the rig reusable across geodes found later. For a typical single geode with a modest cluster count, it is more construction than the output justifies.
The honest alternative: just mine it by hand
Because clusters only need breaking once fully grown, and because amethyst demand is comparatively low (more on that below), a lot of players never automate this. They find a geode, mine the visible clusters with a Fortune pickaxe the first time through, and revisit it occasionally on a normal caving circuit to collect whatever regrew. This works fine and costs nothing to set up.

Automation pays for itself when you are farming a large geode you would otherwise have to manually break dozens of clusters in every time you visit, or when the farm feeds a redstone build (calibrated sculk sensors, spyglass production) that you want running unattended. It does not pay for itself for a single small geode you pass once.
What amethyst shards are actually for
This is where a lot of amethyst coverage stops short and just says "crafting material." Here is exactly what shards unlock:
- Spyglass: 1 amethyst shard + 2 copper ingots, crafted together, yields 1 spyglass. Useful for scouting without exposing yourself, or for structure-hunting from a distance.
- Tinted glass: 4 amethyst shards + 1 glass block yields 2 tinted glass. Tinted glass blocks light entirely while staying see-through-adjacent for some mechanics, a niche but genuinely useful building and light-control block.
- Calibrated sculk sensor: 3 amethyst shards + 1 sculk sensor yields 1 calibrated sculk sensor. Beyond shards, the amethyst block itself (crafted from 4 shards, or found in a geode's outer amethyst layer) has its own use: as a note block instrument it plays a harp sound in Java Edition, which is why it shows up in note-block music builds. It also relays vibrations when placed next to a sculk or calibrated sculk sensor, letting builders chain detection wirelessly.
Amethyst demand is real but narrow: almost nobody needs a farm for it, and the players who do already know exactly why.
Be honest about scale. Amethyst demand is nowhere near iron or gold. There is no armor, tool, or weapon made from it, and the block-crafting recipes are cosmetic. Most players never need more shards than a single geode gives across a handful of visits: one spyglass, maybe some tinted glass. A dedicated farm earns its build time for players doing calibrated-sculk-sensor redstone at real scale, since those consume shards three at a time. Common mistakes
- Mining budding amethyst by accident. It drops nothing under any circumstance, including Silk Touch, and once broken that growth slot is gone from this geode forever.
- Breaking buds before they finish growing. Small, medium, and large stages all drop nothing. A fast timer wastes cycles breaking immature buds instead of waiting for clusters.
- Assuming bone meal speeds growth. It does not affect amethyst; growth is random-tick only.
- Building a large redstone rig for a small geode. A flying machine sweep is a lot of construction for three or four buds; a couple of fixed pistons, or mining by hand, covers that case with far less effort.
- Treating shard output like an iron farm rate. The wiki publishes no shards-per-hour figure for amethyst, since output depends on how many bud faces a given geode has. Do not plan around a number nobody has measured.
