Bed mining
You dig down to roughly Y 16, place a bed against the wall or ceiling, and right-click it. Because you're in the Nether, the bed explodes instead of letting you sleep, clearing a large pocket of netherrack instantly and leaving any ancient debris caught in the blast exposed. It is the fastest method by a wide margin.

Never bed-mine blind. Check what's below and beside the spot before you detonate. A bed explosion breaking through into an open lava pocket at that depth is one of the most common ways players lose their entire inventory in the Nether, and at that depth, death usually means the run is over.
TNT mining
Mechanically identical to bed mining (TNT is power 4 versus a bed's power 5, both far short of ancient debris's resistance), but more controllable: you place and detonate it deliberately, rather than committing the moment you right-click a bed. This suits players who already have a gunpowder farm, since TNT then costs nothing but sand.

There is no single "best" method here. A player without a gunpowder farm and without a wool surplus is often better off tunnelling safely than forcing bed mining without the resources to sustain it. Any specific "debris per hour" figure depends entirely on your gear, your method, your luck with the triangular distribution, and how much of each Nether chunk you actually clear. Nether hazards that specifically kill debris miners

Getting ancient debris out of the ground is step one. Every count below is a wiki figure, not an approximation.
- Smelt ancient debris. One block, smelted in a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker with any normal fuel, produces 2 netherite scrap.
- Combine scrap with gold. 4 netherite scrap + 4 gold ingots craft into 1 netherite ingot, on a crafting table.
- Upgrade diamond gear. At a smithing table, combine a diamond armor piece, tool, or weapon with a netherite upgrade smithing template and 1 netherite ingot. The output is the netherite equivalent, keeping existing enchantments.
So a full netherite armor set (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) needs 4 netherite ingots, which needs 16 netherite scrap, which needs 8 ancient debris, plus 16 gold ingots and 4 smithing templates. Add a sword and pickaxe and you're at 6 ingots, 24 scrap, and 12 ancient debris total.

The smithing template: get one, duplicate the rest
The netherite upgrade smithing template is found in bastion remnant chests.
