Elytra change how you play Minecraft more than any other single item. They also have a reputation for being fragile and irreplaceable, and that reputation is mostly wrong: elytra cannot break. They stop working at 1 durability and sit in your inventory looking tattered until you repair them.

Getting a pair means a trip to the outer End islands, which means beating the dragon first. Here is the whole route and, more usefully, the repair maths that decides whether your pair lasts a world or costs you a fortune in levels.

Getting there: the End gateway

Elytra generate in End cities on the outer End islands, roughly 1,000 blocks from the central island. You reach those islands through an End gateway, which only appears after the ender dragon dies. If you have not done that yet, start with how to kill the ender dragon.

The gateway is a small bedrock structure with a one-block gap. Walking into it does not work cleanly; the usual method is to throw an ender pearl into the gap, which teleports you through. You arrive on the far side, roughly a thousand blocks out, on the edge of the outer islands.

Coming back is the same gateway in reverse, and it is easy to arrive in the outer islands without having planned the return. Bring spare pearls. Being stranded 1,000 blocks out across void with no pearls means a long death or a long bridge.

From the arrival gateway you have to find a city. They are common in the outer islands but not guaranteed nearby, so expect some flying or bridging. This is the one part of the trip with no shortcut.

Finding the End ship

Not every End city has elytra. The elytra are specifically in the End ship, a separate floating structure that generates near some cities but not all of them. A city with no ship has loot and shulkers but no wings.

How rare is a ship? Each direction of each city tower has a 50% chance of growing a bridge, and each bridge has a 12.5% chance of carrying a ship. At most one ship generates per city. In practice that means most cities you find will have no ship at all, and getting wings is a matter of checking several cities rather than the first one you land on.

Budget for that before you go. A player who expects the first city to hold elytra and finds none often concludes they are in the wrong place. They are in the right place; ships are simply uncommon. Bring enough supplies to search more than one.

The ship is unmistakable: a dark purpur vessel hanging in the air beside the city, usually above it. Inside, the layout is consistent:

  • The deck and hold hold two loot chests.
  • The treasure room, at the back, holds a dragon head on the bow and, on the wall, the elytra in an item frame.
  • A brewing stand with potions sits in the same area.

Take the elytra out of the item frame by hitting the frame. One ship gives exactly one pair. If you want more than one pair, you want more than one ship.

The shulkers in and around the city are the other reason to be there. Shulker shells are the only source of shulker boxes, and a trip that brings back wings and a stack of shells is a much better trip than one that only brings wings.

Elytra never break

This is the part worth internalising, because it changes how you treat them.

Elytra have 432 durability in Java Edition, which is about seven minutes of continuous gliding. When that runs out, they do not shatter. Durability stops at 1, the texture goes tattered, and they stop providing flight until repaired.

That means a pair of elytra is never lost to wear. You can fly them to zero with no risk of losing the item. The only ways to actually lose elytra are the ordinary ones: dying somewhere you cannot return to, or dropping them in lava or the void.

Flying elytra to their last point of durability costs you nothing but a landing. They do not break; they wait.

Repairing: membranes versus Mending

There are three ways to restore durability, and they are not equivalent.

Method Restores Cost
Phantom membrane in an anvil 108 durability (25%) Levels, rising with prior work
Two elytra combined in an anvil Both durabilities plus 21 Costs you a second pair
Mending enchantment Repairs from XP as you collect it One-time enchant, then free

Phantom membranes restore a quarter of the bar each, so four membranes take a dead pair back to full. Membranes come from phantoms, which spawn when you have not slept for several in-game days, so the supply is awkward: you need to deliberately avoid sleeping to farm the thing that repairs your wings.

Mending is the answer for a pair you intend to keep. Enchant the elytra with Mending in an anvil using a book, and from then on any XP you collect repairs them automatically while they are equipped. Combined with a steady XP source, a Mending pair effectively never needs an anvil again. Our XP farm guide covers building that source.

Unbreaking III is worth adding on top. It does not repair anything, it just makes each point of durability last longer, which stretches both your flight time and the amount of XP Mending needs.

Watch the anvil's prior work penalty. Every anvil operation on an item makes the next one more expensive, doubling along 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 until you hit "Too Expensive" at 40 levels. Put Mending and Unbreaking on in as few operations as you can, ideally by combining the books together first and applying the result once. The enchanting guide covers the ordering that keeps costs down.

Flying: rockets and the one rule

Elytra alone only glide: you trade height for distance. Sustained flight needs firework rockets, used while gliding to accelerate.

A rocket is paper plus gunpowder, and the flight duration (one to three gunpowder) sets how long the boost lasts. Three-gunpowder rockets go further per rocket and are the standard for travel.

Cons

  • Never put a firework star in a travel rocket. A rocket with a star explodes and damages you mid-flight. Stars are for fireworks displays, not for flying.
  • Do not fly with low durability over void. The elytra stopping at 1 is not a graceful landing; it is an immediate fall from wherever you were.
  • Do not fly into rain without knowing it. Rain does not damage elytra, but it wrecks visibility right when you are moving fastest.

The practical flying rule is simple: watch your durability bar, not the ground. Elytra failing mid-flight is survivable if you have a water bucket, blocks or a second glide plan, and fatal if you were not looking.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you find elytra in Minecraft?

In the treasure room of an End ship, hanging in an item frame. End ships generate near some End cities in the outer End islands, which you reach through an End gateway after killing the ender dragon. One ship holds one pair.

Can elytra break permanently?

No. Elytra durability stops at 1 rather than reaching zero. They stop working and the texture changes, but the item stays in your inventory and can be repaired to full. The only way to lose them is dying somewhere unreachable or dropping them in lava or the void.

How do you repair elytra?

Phantom membranes in an anvil restore 108 durability each, so four take a dead pair to full. The better long-term answer is the Mending enchantment, which repairs them automatically from XP you collect while wearing them. Two damaged elytra can also be combined in an anvil.

How long do elytra last?

432 durability in Java Edition, which is roughly seven minutes of continuous gliding. Unbreaking III extends that substantially, and Mending removes the question entirely if you have a reliable XP source.

Do you need to kill the ender dragon to get elytra?

Yes, indirectly. Elytra are in the outer End islands, and the only route there is an End gateway, which does not appear until the dragon has been killed.

Can you fly with elytra without fireworks?

Only as a glide. Without rockets you convert height into distance and eventually land. Firework rockets provide the thrust that makes elytra a travel system rather than a controlled fall.

What elytra change

Once you have wings, the map stops being large. Journeys that were a planning exercise become a rocket and two minutes, which quietly changes what is worth building and where.

The trip that gets you there is worth doing properly: bring pearls for the gateway both ways, and come back with shulker shells as well as wings, because the shulker box is the other item that makes the late game feel different. If you have not beaten the dragon yet, the fight guide and the stronghold guide are the two steps before this one.
