The shulker box is the single best storage item in Minecraft, and the reason is one property no other container has: it keeps its contents when you break it. Everything inside travels with the item. No Silk Touch, no special tool, no spilled inventory on the floor.

That makes it the difference between a mining trip that fills one chest and one that fills nine. The limiting factor is shulker shells, and the good news is that the supply is not actually finite.

Getting shells

Shulker shells come from shulkers, which live in End cities in the outer End islands. That means beating the dragon and taking a gateway out, the same trip that gets you elytra.

The drop rate is where planning matters:

Weapon Shell chance per shulker
No Looting 50%
Looting I 56.25%
Looting II 62.50%
Looting III 68.75%

Each box needs two shells, so at base rate you kill four shulkers per box on average. With Looting III that drops to roughly three. Looting III is worth bringing; it is not worth making a special trip to get first.

Shulkers shoot homing projectiles that apply Levitation. The danger is not the damage, it is being floated off a ledge in a city suspended over the void. Fight them with a wall at your back and something to land on.

Shells are not finite

The common belief is that every world has a fixed number of shulkers and therefore a hard ceiling on boxes. That is not true. Shulkers do not respawn, but they can be made to duplicate: a shulker hit by another shulker's bullet has a chance to spawn a new one.

The practical takeaway for a normal player is small and worth acting on: do not clear a city out. Kill what you need for shells and leave some alive, because the ones you leave can multiply and the ones you kill cannot.

Turning that into an actual production loop is a build project with real constraints, and we have a whole guide for it: how to build a shulker farm covers the exact conditions, the spacing penalty that shapes the design, and an honest assessment of who should bother.

The duplication rules differ by edition, and Bedrock's are more generous. That is one of many places where following a Java tutorial on Bedrock quietly wastes your time: see Java farms on Bedrock for the wider pattern.

While you are there: the city chests

The shells are the reason to go, but the chests are worth opening on the way. End city loot is one of the better chest pools in the game:

Item Chance per chest
Gold ingots (2-7) 50.6%
Iron ingots (4-8) 37.0%
Diamonds (2-7) 20.4%
Enchanted gear (each piece type) ~12.7%
Saddle 12.7%
Emeralds (2-6) 8.6%
Spire armor trim 6.7%
Horse armor (each variant) 4.4%

The enchanted diamond gear is the standout: it rolls at the equivalent of a level 20 to 39 enchanting table result, which is better than most players can produce at home without a full setup. A city trip commonly pays for itself in gear before you count the shells.

Crafting and the rules that follow

Two shulker shells plus one chest makes a shulker box. The shells go above and below the chest.

The resulting box has 27 slots, the same as a chest, and the important behaviors are:

Pros

  • Keeps contents when broken. Any tool, no Silk Touch required.
  • Can be stored inside other containers. A chest full of shulker boxes is a chest with 27 times the capacity.
  • Can be opened while held, so you can access one from your inventory without placing it.
  • Dyeable, and the dye is reversible. Contents survive dyeing.

Cons

  • Cannot be nested. A shulker box cannot go inside another shulker box, and cannot go in a bundle.
  • Cannot be opened with a block in the way. The lid needs space to open.

The nesting restriction is the one that shapes how people use them. You cannot build a box-in-box chain for infinite storage; one layer of nesting inside a chest or an ender chest is the whole system.

The ender chest combination

The trick that makes shulker boxes properly powerful is pairing them with an ender chest. An ender chest's contents follow you across the world and across dimensions, and a shulker box fits inside one.

That means: put a shulker box in your ender chest, and you have 27 slots of storage accessible from anywhere, including the Nether and the End. Mining trips stop needing return journeys. You fill the box, place it in the ender chest, and it is waiting at home.

An ender chest holding a shulker box is a portable 27-slot backpack that exists everywhere at once.

Dyeing, and the part people get wrong

A shulker box is dyed by crafting it together with any dye. It keeps its contents through this, so you can color-code a box without emptying it first.

The reversal is less well known: a dyed shulker box can be undyed in a cauldron of water. Use the box on a water cauldron and the color comes off. You are not stuck with a color choice, and you do not need to craft a fresh box to change it.

Color coding is not decoration at scale. A storage room of identical purple boxes means opening each one to find anything; ores in one color, building blocks in another and food in a third turns a search into a glance.

Frequently asked questions

Do shulker boxes keep their items when broken?

Yes, and this is their defining property. The contents are stored in the dropped item rather than spilling out, and no Silk Touch or special tool is needed. Any tool works, and the box can be picked up and carried with everything still inside.

How many shulker shells do you need for one box?

Two shells and one chest. Shulkers drop a shell 50% of the time without Looting, so expect about four kills per box, or around three with Looting III.

Can you put a shulker box inside a shulker box?

No. Shulker boxes can go inside chests, ender chests, barrels and most containers, but not inside another shulker box or a bundle. One layer of nesting is the limit.

Do shulkers respawn in End cities?

They do not respawn on their own, but they can duplicate: a shulker hit by another shulker's bullet has a chance to spawn a new one. So a city is only permanently empty if you empty it. Leave some alive. The shulker farm guide covers building that into a real production loop.

Does Looting increase shulker shell drops?

Yes. In Java Edition it raises the chance from 50% to 56.25%, 62.5% and 68.75% at Looting I, II and III. In Bedrock the mechanic differs and Looting III can yield up to four shells.

Can you change the color of a shulker box?

Yes, in both directions. Craft it with any dye to color it, and use it on a cauldron of water to remove the color. Contents survive both operations.

Why this is the endgame item that matters

Elytra change how far you travel. Shulker boxes change how much you can bring back, which turns out to matter just as much once the map stops being the constraint.

The trip is the same trip, which is the practical takeaway: when you go to the End for wings, do not clear the city of shulkers. Kill enough for the shells you need, leave a breeding pair, and you have a supply rather than a souvenir. Getting there starts with the stronghold and the dragon.
