Minecraft is getting its first new dimension in over 14 years. The Sift, the dimension at the heart of Minecraft Dungeons II, is coming to Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. That was the headline of Minecraft Live on 26 September 2026, but it was not the only thing that matters for people who actually play the base game.

The next drop is Ice Caves: a new underground biome under cold biomes, a new hostile mob called the frozen zombie, and a brand new status effect, freezing, that players can brew and shoot. On top of that came a Switch 2 release date, an official Creator Platform, a sound effects pack, and a Minecraft theme park.

This recap goes through every announcement, and for each one it separates what Mojang showed on stage from what people are already filling in with guesses.

The Sift: Minecraft's fourth dimension

For fourteen years, Minecraft has had three dimensions. The End arrived in 2011 and nothing has joined it since. The Sift changes that.

What Mojang has confirmed:

  • It is a full dimension, not a biome. It joins the Overworld, the Nether and the End as the fourth.
  • It comes to both Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. Not in 2026, and not in the Ice Caves drop.
  • You can see it first in Minecraft Dungeons II, which releases on 29 September 2026. It is the same dimension, built for the spin-off first and then brought into vanilla.
  • Two biomes have names so far: Meadows and Carapace. Mojang has said other areas exist and are being kept back for players to discover.
  • It has its own mobs, both companion creatures and hostile ones, and hazardous new blocks that Mojang says change how you approach exploring it.
  • "Shifting tides" inside the Sift can affect your character and the players around you. In Dungeons II's framing, strange events upend the natural order of the Overworld, new enemy types appear, and souls start flying through the world.

Mojang also said the Sift is being built behind the scenes, alongside the regular game drops, rather than instead of them. That matters: the drop cadence we have had through 2026 (26.1, 26.2, 26.3) is not being paused for it.

How you get to the Sift in vanilla Minecraft has not been announced. No portal, no structure, no ritual. Any video showing "how to build a Sift portal" right now is either a mod, a concept, or made up. The same goes for the list of Sift mobs, blocks and loot: Dungeons II will show us a version of the dimension, but Mojang has not promised the vanilla one will match it block for block.

Why a Dungeons II dimension matters for the main game

This is the first time a Minecraft spin-off has been used to introduce something that then moves into the base game on this scale. It means that from 29 September, anyone who plays Dungeons II will be looking at a preview of 2027 vanilla content, and the community will be reverse-engineering it for months.

It also sets expectations. A dimension brings its own world generation, its own progression and almost certainly its own farming meta, the way the Nether did with gold and the End did with shulkers. We will cover the technical side once there is something in a snapshot to test. Until then, treat anything more specific than the list above as speculation.

The End arrived in 2011. Nothing has joined it since. The Sift is the first real change to Minecraft's map of worlds in fourteen years.

Ice Caves: the next drop

The Sift is the long-term story. Ice Caves is the one you will actually play first. It is the next game drop, the fourth and last of 2026, which puts it on the Java 26.4 track that just got its first snapshot.

Where they generate and what is in them

Ice Caves generate below cold biomes, as a rare underground extension of them. Mojang pitched them as a contrast between light and dark, and the blocks shown on stage follow that idea:

  • Packed ice and calcite make up the cave walls. The packed ice breaks easily and exposes stone underneath.
  • Glowing ice crystals are the light source of the biome.
  • Icicles hang from the ceiling and can fall, which makes them a hazard rather than decoration.
  • Lava generates in the same caves, so you get fire and ice in the same space.

The frozen zombie

The new hostile mob is a zombie variant built around cold:

  • Its melee attacks apply the new freezing effect to you.
  • Some frozen zombies spawn holding ice balls, which they throw as a ranged attack.
  • A frozen zombie that spawns with ice balls drops them when killed.
  • It spawns in Ice Caves, and Mojang left the door open to it appearing in cold biomes on the surface too.

The ice ball is the important drop, because it is the ingredient for the next part.

Freezing: a new status effect

Freezing is a brand new status effect. It slows you down and deals damage over time, which is a combination Minecraft has not had in a single effect before (slowness slows, poison and wither damage, but nothing does both).

Players get access to it too. Ice balls are the main ingredient for freezing potions and freezing arrows. That puts a new tool in PvP and in mob fights: a slowing damage-over-time arrow is a real change to how bow combat works, both for players and for anyone clearing a mob farm by hand.

If you have ever been in powder snow, you know Minecraft already has a "freezing" mechanic: the blue frost overlay and damage from standing in powder snow too long. The new freezing is presented as a status effect with potion and arrow forms. Mojang has not explained how the two interact, for example whether leather armor, which protects against powder snow, also protects against the new effect. Wait for the snapshot before planning around it.

What we still do not know about Ice Caves

  • A release date. "The next drop" and "the last drop of 2026" is all we have.
  • Numbers. Health, damage, freezing duration, ice ball drop rates, potion brewing recipe. None of it was shown.
  • Whether Ice Caves appear in old worlds. Normally new biomes only generate in new chunks. The 26.4 snapshot added retrogen of sulfur caves below old worlds (see the snapshot breakdown), but that is a different system and says nothing yet about Ice Caves.

We will do a proper Ice Caves guide, with a frozen zombie farm if one turns out to be practical, as soon as the features appear in a snapshot and can be tested.

Minecraft Dungeons II

The spin-off sequel releases on Tuesday 29 September 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam.

What changes from the first game, per the stream:

  • An interconnected world instead of isolated levels
  • NPCs and villagers
  • Jumping (the first Dungeons did not have it)
  • A proper inventory system
  • Talismans
  • Rifts, and of course the Sift itself

The aftershow, "The Deep Dig," featured the first live gameplay of Dungeons II with Ph1lza, falsesymmetry and members of the Mojang team, plus three Ice Caves challenges with Agnes Larsson and falsesymmetry.

Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2: 27 October

A native Switch 2 version of Minecraft (Bedrock) arrives on 27 October 2026. It ships with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default, which means directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows and water reflections out of the box.

Players who already own Minecraft on the original Switch get a digital upgrade path to the Switch 2 version. Marketplace content that supports Vibrant Visuals gets the visual upgrade automatically, and the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack is being updated to show it off.

If you are not sure what Bedrock on Switch means for your server or your friends on PC, Java vs Bedrock in 2026 covers crossplay and the practical differences.

The Creator Platform

Jens Bergensten, Minecraft's Creative Director, opened the show by talking about community creativity and announced an official creator platform. The goal is to make it easier for players to create, manage and share their own Minecraft content, and to lower the barrier for people who want to become professional creators.

What it is not, yet: a product with a name, a date, a price or a list of supported content types. We do not know whether it covers Java data packs and resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, Marketplace content, or all of them. That is the question that matters most for this site's readers, and Mojang did not answer it.

Everything else from the stream

Sound Effects Pack

A resource pack variant for customizing game audio. Replacing sounds through resource packs has always been possible (see how to install resource packs), so the interesting part is the official, structured version of it. No date.

Wilderness Bound follow-up

Agnes Larsson talked about cushions, from 26.3, working as entities rather than blocks, and highlighted what the community has been building with them. If you have been wondering why cushions behave strangely with pistons and placement, that is why: see straw beds and cushions.

Minecraft Education turns ten

The show marked the tenth anniversary of Minecraft Education.

Minecraft World at Chessington

The first fully themed Minecraft land opens in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures Resort near London, built with Merlin Entertainments. The headline ride is "Escape The Nether," an indoor roller coaster by Intamin, and the land is designed to move through several Minecraft environments. The first official Minecraft hotel was announced alongside it.

The stream also featured the Villager News add-on (Oreville Studios and Element Animation) and the SoulSteel server.

What was not announced

It is worth being clear about the gaps, because this is where misinformation fills in:

  • No mob vote. It stayed retired, as we expected.
  • No release date for Ice Caves.
  • No access method, progression or loot for the Sift in vanilla.
  • No changes to redstone, villagers or existing farms were shown. Nothing on stage should break a farm you have running today.
  • No Java-specific announcements beyond what the 26.4 snapshots are already showing, such as Vulkan becoming the default renderer.

Pros

  • A fourth dimension is the biggest content addition since the End, and it is officially confirmed for both editions
  • Ice Caves adds a new mob, a new effect and new combat tools in the very next drop
  • The regular drop schedule continues alongside the Sift work
  • Switch 2 players get a native version with Vibrant Visuals on day one

Cons

  • The Sift is a 2027 feature, with no date and no vanilla access method yet
  • No numbers at all for the frozen zombie, freezing or ice balls
  • The Creator Platform is an announcement of intent, not a product
  • A lot of the Sift's first impression will come from a paid spin-off game

Frequently asked questions

What is the new Minecraft dimension called?

The Sift. It is the fourth dimension, after the Overworld, the Nether and the End, and the first new one in over 14 years.

When is the Sift coming to Minecraft?

In 2027, for both Java and Bedrock Edition. There is no exact date. You can explore it earlier in Minecraft Dungeons II, which releases on 29 September 2026.

How do you get to the Sift?

Mojang has not announced how you reach the Sift in the base game. There is no confirmed portal or structure yet.

What is the next Minecraft update?

Ice Caves, the fourth game drop of 2026. On Java it is being developed as version 26.4, and the first 26.4 snapshot released on 22 September 2026 (it does not contain any Ice Caves content yet).

What does the frozen zombie do?

It applies the new freezing effect with its melee attacks, and some frozen zombies spawn holding ice balls that they throw at you. Those zombies drop ice balls when killed.

What does the freezing effect do?

It slows you and deals damage over time. You can use it yourself through freezing potions and freezing arrows, which are made with ice balls.

Was there a mob vote at Minecraft Live 2026?

No. The mob vote has not returned since it ended in 2023.

When does Minecraft come out on Switch 2?

27 October 2026, with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default and a digital upgrade path for existing Switch owners.

What happens next

The next few weeks should look like this: 26.4 snapshots keep landing on Java (usually weekly), Bedrock previews follow, and Ice Caves content starts appearing piece by piece. Dungeons II gives everyone a first look at the Sift from 29 September.

We will cover each piece as it becomes testable, not before. For the technical side of what is already in the first 26.4 snapshot, including Vulkan becoming the default renderer and sulfur caves generating under old worlds, read Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 1: every change explained.
