Minecraft has had wool and concrete as full-color block sets for years. What it has never had, until now, is a way to turn either one into a stair or a slab. Two separate additions, both confirmed on the wiki's 26.3 page:

Neither is a new material. Wool and concrete have existed for years. What is new is the shape: until this update, if you wanted a stair or a slab profile, you reached for stone, wood, or terracotta, because wool and concrete simply did not come in those cuts. That gap is what 26.3 closes.
Why this matters more than a normal block drop
Most updates add a handful of blocks tied to a new biome or material. This one adds two shapes across a combined 32 existing colors, and the two additions solve two completely different building problems.
Wool stairs and slabs are about softness. Wool is one of the only blocks with a genuinely non-blocky, matte, fabric-like texture, and until now the only shapes it came in were the full cube and the flat carpet. Stairs and slabs mean you can now build actual furniture silhouettes out of it: a sofa seat, a stepped cushion pile, a soft-edged stair transition in a bedroom, an armchair back. Concrete stairs and slabs are about saturated flat color in a hard shape. Concrete is the most solidly colored block in the game, flatter and more uniform than terracotta, and until now it only existed as a full cube (plus powder). Anyone who wanted a stepped roofline or a slab floor in pure saturated red, lime, or cyan had two choices: use terracotta and accept its mottled texture, or fake the shape with a different material and live with the color mismatch. Concrete stairs remove that compromise: the exact flat color of the cube, in a stair or slab profile.

Crafting: what each recipe needs
Both follow Minecraft's standard stair and slab crafting shapes, using the matching colored block as the sole ingredient, the same pattern stone and wood already use.
- Wool stairs and slabs: crafted directly from matching wool, following the normal stair and slab shapes.
- Concrete stairs and slabs: crafted directly from matching concrete, and the stonecutter path is confirmed too. A stonecutter converts one concrete block into stairs or slabs without filling a 3x3 crafting grid every time, which matters on a large build.
If you already have a stonecutter set up for stone shapes, add your concrete stack to the same workflow. It is the fastest way to turn a pallet of one color into a mixed batch of stairs and slabs for a roofline or a floor transition.
Wool's crafting route does not go through the stonecutter; the wiki documents the stonecutter conversion for concrete specifically, not for wool. If you are stocking up on wool stairs and slabs, plan on the crafting table.
Do wool stairs keep wool's properties?
Yes, and this is the part worth being careful about before you build with them. Stairs and slabs made from wool inherit the same base material as the block they came from, the same way oak stairs behave like oak planks:
- They stay flammable. Wool burns and catches fire from lava, and that is a property of the material, not the cube shape, so treat wool stairs and slabs as flammable too. Do not run them as trim next to a furnace, campfire, or anywhere lava can splash. This is the one real caution with the wool addition: it finally gives you fabric-textured furniture, but the same softness that makes wool read as cloth is also what makes it burn.
- They dampen sound. Wool blocks vibrations from reaching sculk sensors and mutes nearby sound detection, the property that makes wool useful around Wardens and sculk builds. That is a material property, so a wool stair or slab in a sensor's range should carry the same dampening.
- They come in all 16 colors. Wool already comes in all 16 dye colors as a base block, and the stairs and slabs ship in the same full set, so you just craft the shade you want from the matching wool.
Do concrete stairs behave like concrete?
Also yes. Concrete's headline material trait is that it needs a pickaxe and has a real blast resistance, unlike its powder form which just falls and has none of that toughness. Concrete stairs and slabs carry the same requirement: mine them with at least a wooden pickaxe, and expect the same blast resistance concrete cubes have, meaningfully higher than wool or wood. That makes concrete stairs and slabs the pick when you want a stepped or half-height shape that still holds up structurally, not just visually, the way a stone or deepslate stair would.

Palette ideas: what to actually build
A few pairings worth trying once you have a stack of each:
- Wool stairs as furniture, not architecture. Use them for couch cushions, stacked pillow shapes, or a stepped bed skirt rather than a structural roofline. The flammability risk and the soft texture both read better up close, on furniture, than from a distance on a rooftop.
- Concrete stairs for interiors that want flat, modern color. A concrete slab floor in one saturated color, with concrete stairs handling a stepped platform or sunken seating area, gives a clean, non-natural look terracotta cannot match, since terracotta always carries its mottled pattern.
- Mix the two on the same piece of furniture. A wool cushion top on a concrete slab base reads as an actual manufactured chair or bench: soft fabric on a hard flat frame, a distinction the game could not make before this update.
- Match concrete stairs to your terracotta accents, not against them. Since concrete's colors are the same dye-based 16 as terracotta, a build already leaning on terracotta trim can extend into concrete stairs and slabs for a flatter accent without reconciling a new palette.
What could still change
Pre-Release 1 freezes the feature list, so nothing here should flip before release, but keep two things in mind:
- Exact recipe yields are not fully nailed down across every source checked for this article, and past updates have occasionally adjusted stack or yield numbers between pre-release and final release. Treat the crafting shape (matching-color block in, stair or slab out) as solid, and the precise output count as worth double-checking in-game once you are playing the pre-release yourself.
- Release date is still only "September 2026." Pre-Release 1 landing on 1 September means release is close, but Mojang has not announced an exact day.
