The allay is one of the friendliest mobs in Minecraft: a small blue spirit that collects items for you and dances to music. It is also one of the most suspicious, once you look at where you find it. Allays are never free in the wild. Every naturally generated allay is locked up, and always by the same people: the illagers.
And illagers have a small, flying, winged spirit of their own: the vex. That coincidence is the root of one of the community's favorite theories. This page sets out the evidence, and where it runs out.

This is a theory, not canon. Mojang has never said that allays and vexes are related. The facts below are what the game shows; the connection between them is a community reading, labelled as such.
Quick answers
- Are allays vexes? Not officially. They are separate mobs with different behavior. The idea that vexes are corrupted allays is a popular fan theory.
- Why are allays in cages? Because that is the only way they generate: in dark oak cages at pillager outposts and jail cells in woodland mansions, both illager buildings. The game never explains why.
- Where do you find allays? At pillager outposts (cages next to the tower) and in woodland mansions (cells), in groups of 1 to 3, with a 50% chance at each.
What the game shows: the allay
- Added in Java 1.19, after winning the Minecraft Live 2021 mob vote, beating the copper golem in the final round (which itself arrived years later, in 2025).
- 20 health, and it heals itself quickly.
- Give it an item and it collects matching dropped items within 32 blocks and brings them back to you, or to a note block it heard play nearby.
- It loves music: near a playing jukebox it dances, and if you give a dancing allay an amethyst shard, it duplicates, with a 5-minute cooldown.
- It is found only imprisoned: in cages at pillager outposts and cells in woodland mansions.

What the game shows: the vex
- Vexes are summoned by evokers, the spellcasting illagers.
- They are small, winged, flying spirits that pass through walls and attack with a sword.
- They do not spawn on their own and die after a short time.
- They are neither illagers nor raiders: they exist only because an evoker called them.
The theory: vexes are what allays become
Put the two together and a story suggests itself:
- Allays and vexes are both small, winged, floating spirits, roughly the same size and shape.
- Illagers keep allays prisoner. Every allay in the world starts out caged in an illager building.
- Illagers use vexes as weapons. Evokers summon them in fights.
The reading: illagers capture allays, and evokers use their magic to turn them into vexes, corrupted, short-lived, hostile versions of the gentle spirits. Freeing an allay from its cage is rescuing it before that happens.
It is a satisfying story because it explains the one thing the game leaves unexplained: why allays are caged at all. Nothing else about illagers needs allays.
Where the evidence stops
Being honest about the gaps matters here, because this theory is often repeated as if it were confirmed.
- Mojang has never linked them. No official text, mob description or developer comment says allays and vexes are connected.
- Allays were designed separately. The allay came from the 2021 mob vote as a new helper mob, years after the vex existed (the vex arrived with woodland mansions in 1.11).
- There is no transformation in the game. No mechanic turns an allay into a vex, and no evoker interacts with caged allays.
- The cages have other explanations. Allays may simply be prisoners or pets, or the cages may exist so that finding one feels like a rescue: good game design without any lore behind it.
So the honest status is: a theory that fits the visuals and explains the cages, with no confirmation and no in-game mechanic behind it.
Every allay in the world starts out in an illager's cage. The game never says why, and that silence is where the theory lives.
How it fits the wider illager story
If the theory is right, it adds a darker layer to the illagers: not just exiles who raid villages, but a people who capture spirits and bend them to war. That matches the evoker, the illager who works with magic, and the general feeling that illagers are the game's organized villains. For everything the game does say about illagers, see illagers explained and the longer villagers and illagers lore.
Frequently asked questions
Are allays and vexes the same mob?
No. They are separate mobs with different behavior. The idea that vexes are corrupted allays is a fan theory Mojang has not confirmed.
Why are allays trapped in cages?
The game generates them only in cages at pillager outposts and cells in woodland mansions. Mojang has not explained why; the cages are a key part of the allay and vex theory.
How do you free an allay?
Break into the cage or cell, then give the allay an item. It will follow and collect for you.
Can an allay turn into a vex?
No. There is no mechanic in the game that changes an allay into a vex.
How do you duplicate allays?
Give an amethyst shard to an allay while it is dancing near a playing jukebox. Both allays then have a 5-minute cooldown.
