The copper golem is the first mob in Minecraft that does a storage job for you. Drop items into a copper chest, and a copper golem takes them out and carries them to the wooden chest that already holds the same item. No hoppers, no comparators, no redstone at all.
It also has a reputation for "randomly stopping". It is not random. A copper golem follows a short list of exact rules, and every "my golem stopped sorting" problem comes from breaking one of them. This guide lays out those rules with the numbers, then turns them into a layout.

Checked for: Minecraft 26.3, Java Edition. The copper golem arrived with The Copper Age drop (1.21.9) and its sorting rules have not changed since. Values below are from the Minecraft Wiki's documented Java behavior.
Making a copper golem
Place a block of copper (any oxidation stage), then put a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern on top. That is the whole recipe. The golem has 12 health and drops 1 to 3 copper ingots when killed, more with Looting in Java.
You also need copper chests: a normal chest surrounded by eight copper ingots in a crafting table.
The sorting loop, step by step
A copper golem runs the same loop forever:
- Find a copper chest with items in it. It takes up to 16 of the first item it finds (or a single item, for unstackables).
- Carry it to a wooden chest. It goes to the nearest wooden chest or trapped chest it can use.
- Check whether the item belongs there. The chest qualifies if it is empty, or if it already contains the same type of item. If so, the golem puts the items in.
- If not, try the next nearest chest. Each chest it opens costs about 3 seconds of stopping and looking.
- Give up after 10. The golem remembers up to 9 chests it has already visited. If it checks 10 chests without finding a place, it wanders for 7 seconds, forgets the chests it opened, and starts over.
The same memory limit applies on the pickup side: it remembers up to 9 copper chests, and after checking 10 with nothing to take, it wanders for 7 seconds and forgets them.
The golem never stops sorting at random. It runs out of chests it is allowed to check, wanders for seven seconds, and tries again.
The four rules that decide whether it works
1. The search area: 65 x 17 x 65
A golem looks for chests and copper chests in a 65 x 17 x 65 area centered on its position: 32 blocks out in each horizontal direction, 8 up and 8 down. A chest outside that box does not exist as far as the golem is concerned.
2. The reach: 1 block up, 2 blocks down
Inside that area, the golem can only use chests that are no more than 1 block above it and no more than 2 blocks below it. This is the rule behind most broken sorting rooms. A chest on a shelf two blocks above the floor the golem walks on is inside the search area and still unusable.

3. Matching: same item type, nothing else
A golem matches on item type only. It ignores durability, enchantments, custom names, the contents of shulker boxes and bundles, and any other data. A damaged pickaxe and an enchanted one count as the same item. A shulker box full of diamonds counts as "a shulker box".
4. Containers it ignores
It only uses copper chests (to pick up) and wooden chests or trapped chests (to deliver). It ignores barrels, ender chests, chest minecarts, chest boats, items on the ground, and every other container. A barrel wall is invisible to it.
The empty chest trap, and how to use it
Rule 3 has a consequence that catches everyone: an empty chest accepts anything. If your storage room has empty chests, the golem fills them with whatever it is carrying, in whatever order it reaches them, and your sorted room is no longer sorted.
Turn that into a feature:
- Seed every destination chest with one item of the type it should hold before you start the golem. A chest with a single cobblestone becomes the cobblestone chest.
- Keep exactly one empty chest as the overflow, and put it furthest from the golem's route. Because the golem checks the nearest chests first, the overflow is the last one it reaches: anything without a home ends up there instead of in a random chest.
Designing around the 9-chest memory
The golem tries chests nearest first and gives up after 10. In a room with dozens of chests, an item whose chest is the 15th-nearest may never be delivered: the golem checks 10 wrong chests, wanders, forgets, and starts the same failing search again.
Three ways to stay inside the limit:
- Put your most common items nearest. Cobblestone, dirt and other bulk items should sit in the first chests the golem reaches.
- Split storage into small zones, each with its own copper chest and its own golem, with no more than about nine destination chests per zone.
- Keep it to one golem per zone. More golems do not search further; they just repeat the same nearest-first search.
Speed: why golems are slow, and why that is fine
Every chest a golem opens costs about 3 seconds, and it carries at most 16 items per trip. A golem that has to check five chests before finding the right one spends around 15 seconds on 16 items.
That makes copper golems a background sorter for a base, not a bulk sorter for a farm. For high-throughput lines, like the output of an iron or gold farm, a hopper-based item sorter is still far faster and handles items one by one without walking. A good split: hopper sorter for farm output, copper golems for the mixed loot you bring home.
Oxidation, statues and waxing
Copper golems oxidize like copper blocks:
- Each stage takes 7 hours to 7 hours 40 minutes of real time (21 to 23 in-game days): unoxidized, exposed, weathered, oxidized.
- Once fully oxidized and unwaxed, a golem standing in open air has a small chance each tick to turn into a copper golem statue, on average about 8.6 seconds after it becomes eligible. Any items it is holding are dropped. A statue does not sort.
- Prevent it: use honeycomb on the golem to wax it. Wax stops oxidation entirely.
- Undo it: an axe removes the wax from a golem. A statue comes back to life when you use an axe on it once it is unwaxed and unoxidized. Lightning strikes also remove oxidation from golems, one stage at a time.
Wax every golem you rely on. An unwaxed golem in a storage room will eventually freeze into a statue, usually while holding a stack of something.

Frequently asked questions
How does a copper golem sort items?
It takes up to 16 of the first item from a copper chest, carries it to the nearest wooden or trapped chest, and puts it in if that chest is empty or already holds the same item. Otherwise it tries the next nearest chest, up to 10 before it gives up for 7 seconds.
What is the copper golem's range?
It searches a 65 x 17 x 65 area centered on itself, but can only use chests from 1 block above to 2 blocks below its own level.
Why did my copper golem stop sorting?
Usually because the right chest is out of reach (too high), beyond its 10-chest search, or because it turned into a statue after fully oxidizing. Waxing prevents the statue.
Can a copper golem use barrels?
No. It ignores barrels, ender chests, chest minecarts and chest boats. It only takes from copper chests and delivers to wooden or trapped chests.
Does a copper golem sort enchanted items separately?
No. It matches by item type only and ignores enchantments, durability and custom names.
How do I stop a copper golem turning into a statue?
Wax it with honeycomb. An unwaxed golem that reaches full oxidation can turn into a statue and drop what it was carrying.
