The wither is the hardest fight in vanilla Minecraft, and it is the one most likely to destroy your base while you lose it. It has 300 health, it explodes the moment you summon it, it eats through terrain, and halfway through the fight it stops taking arrow damage entirely.
The reward is a nether star, the only ingredient for a beacon. That is the whole reason anyone does this.
Before anything: where you summon it
This decision matters more than your gear. The wither destroys blocks as it moves and fires skulls that break more, so the fight happens wherever you start it whether you like it or not.
| Location | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Overworld, flat and remote | Best. Plains or desert, far from anything you built |
| The End, main island | Moderately safe. Flat end stone, few other mobs, but void edges |
| The Nether | Heavily discouraged. Lava everywhere and terrain that collapses |
| Anywhere near your base | The most common mistake in the game |
The Nether is the intuitive choice and the wrong one. Wither skeletons live there, so the skulls come from there, and it feels like the natural arena. It is also wall-to-wall lava with a ceiling that breaks, and the wither is immune to lava while you are not.
The summon itself is an explosion. The wither spawns, sits invulnerable for about 11 seconds, then detonates with blast power 7, stronger than TNT (4) and stronger than a charged creeper (6). Be behind cover or far away when that timer ends, and never summon it indoors at your base.
Summoning
Four blocks of soul sand or soul soil in a T shape, with three wither skeleton skulls on top.
The skulls are the bottleneck: they drop rarely from wither skeletons in nether fortresses, and a wither skeleton farm is the practical answer if you intend to do this more than once. Looting helps.
Build the T last. Placing the final skull is what starts the 11-second timer, so place the soul sand and two skulls first, then step back and place the third from a distance.
The fight has two halves
This is the part that catches people out, and it mirrors the ender dragon in shape if not in detail.
Above 150 HP, the wither flies around and takes damage from everything: arrows, melee, whatever you have.
Below 150 HP, it gains wither armor and becomes immune to arrows, thrown tridents and wind charges. It also drops closer to the ground and charges at you. From that point the fight is melee only.
Plan your loadout around that split rather than committing to one weapon. A bow gets you through the first half efficiently; the second half needs a sword in hand and the confidence to be near it.
What it does to you
| Attack | Effect |
|---|---|
| Black skull | 8 HP on Normal, plus Wither II for 10 seconds |
| Blue skull | Same damage, slower, destroys more block types |
| Wither effect | Drains health like poison, and unlike poison it can kill you |
| Charge (armored phase) | Contact damage plus knockback |
The Wither effect is what kills players, not the skull hits. It turns your hearts black and keeps draining after the hit lands, and it can take you to zero on its own. Milk removes it instantly, and that is the single most useful item to keep on your hotbar for this fight.
On Hard difficulty the effect lasts 40 seconds instead of 10, which is a different fight entirely.
Gear that actually matters
Pros
- Smite V sword. The wither is undead, so Smite applies and it applies hard. This is a bigger damage increase than Sharpness on any other boss.
- Milk buckets, several. Cancels the Wither effect outright.
- Protection IV armor, netherite if you have it. The netherite guide covers getting there.
- Golden apples, the regular ones are enough. Absorption plus regeneration.
- A bow with Power, for the first half only.
- Blocks to wall off with. The wither breaks them, but it buys seconds.
Cons
- Do not bring a trident as your main weapon. It stops working at half health along with arrows.
- Do not fight in a corridor you cannot leave. The wither breaks walls; you need somewhere to retreat that it has not already opened up.
- Do not bring your elytra. Nothing about this fight rewards flight, and losing them here is a long trip to replace.
Tactics the wiki actually documents
Several approaches work, and they differ mostly in how much setup you are willing to do beforehand.
Hit and run is the straightforward version: bow at range while it is above half, then close in with a Smite sword, drinking milk whenever the Wither effect lands and backing off to heal.
A deep tunnel works because the wither has to approach you along a single line. Dig 30 or more blocks into a hillside and fight from the far end: it cannot flank you, and its skulls hit the tunnel rather than you.
Snow golems are the setup-heavy option. Thirty or more of them inside an obsidian room distract the wither and chip at it while you attack. Building that is a project in itself.
Bedrock suffocation in Java Edition pushes the wither's head into the Nether's bedrock ceiling with pistons. It is the most reliable method and the least like a fight, and it requires building the contraption before you summon anything.
After it dies
The wither drops a nether star, always, and 50 XP when killed by a player or a tamed wolf.
The star crafts into a beacon with 3 obsidian and 4 glass. That is the entire point of the fight, and our beacon guide covers the pyramid maths and which effects are worth the iron.
One wither is one beacon. A full-power beacon needs 164 mineral blocks under it, which is a much longer project than the fight itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much health does the wither have?
300 HP, on every difficulty. Below 150 it gains wither armor, which makes it immune to arrows, thrown tridents and wind charges for the rest of the fight.
Why are my arrows not hurting the wither?
It is below half health. At 150 HP the wither gains a natural armor effect that blocks arrows, tridents and wind charges entirely. Melee still works, so switch to a sword, ideally with Smite.
Where is the safest place to fight the wither?
A flat, remote part of the Overworld such as a plains or desert, well away from anything you have built. The End's main island is a reasonable second choice. The Nether is the worst option despite being where the skulls come from, because of the lava and the collapsing terrain.
Does Smite work on the wither?
Yes. The wither is undead, so Smite applies, and it is a larger damage boost than Sharpness would be. This is one of the few fights where Smite is clearly the correct enchantment.
How do I stop the Wither effect?
Drink milk. It removes the effect instantly. Keep several buckets on the hotbar, because the effect drains health on its own and can kill you after the hit that applied it.
What does the wither drop?
A nether star, every time, plus 50 XP when a player or tamed wolf lands the kill. The star is the only ingredient that makes a beacon, and it has no other use.
The one-line version
Summon it somewhere you do not care about, kill it with a bow until half and a Smite sword after that, and keep milk on the hotbar because the Wither effect kills more players than the skulls do.
The star buys you a beacon, and if you want to do this repeatedly, a wither skeleton farm removes the skull bottleneck. For the story of what you are actually killing, the wither's lore reads it as the game's one purpose-built monster.
