Minecraft 26.2, the "Chaos Cubed" drop, released on June 16, 2026 for Java Edition (Bedrock shipped it as 26.30). It is a compact but dense update: one new underground biome with a full block family, a genuinely weird new mob, the first step toward a modern renderer, and a built-in friends list. This page is the index to everything in the drop, with links to our deep dives where a feature deserves one.
New here? The headline feature is the sulfur caves. Start with the sulfur caves guide: how to find one from the surface, what to mine, and what will hurt you down there.
The headline: sulfur caves
A new cave biome that generates underground and inside hills and mountains, marked on the surface by erupting geysers and sulfur springs. Inside you get bands of two new block families, water pools that vent noxious gas, and a new mob.
- Sulfur caves: how to find them and what to mine - surface markers, every new block (sulfur, cinnabar, potent sulfur, sulfur spikes), the dangers, and the new "Bounce" music disc hidden in mineshaft chests there.
- The sulfur cube, explained - the new slime-like mob absorbs a block you give it and changes behaviour: 12 archetypes including bouncy, sticky, explosive (yes, TNT), and hot. The most contraption-friendly mob Mojang has added in years.
- New building blocks - sulfur (yellow) and cinnabar (red) both come with the full variant set: stairs, slabs, walls, polished, bricks, and chiseled versions. Two new palettes in one drop.
Performance and rendering
- The experimental Vulkan renderer - 26.2 adds a "Graphics API" option in Video Settings with a Prefer Vulkan mode. It is experimental and off by default; our guide covers what Vulkan is, how to enable it safely, and what to actually expect today. If you tune FPS with mods, keep the complete performance guide at hand while the mod ecosystem catches up.
- Reversed depth buffer - a quiet rendering change that reduces Z-fighting (flickering overlapping faces) at distance.
- Java SE 25 is now the minimum Java version for running the game.
Friends list
A built-in friends list, opened with the O key or from the title and pause screens. Two tabs (Friends and Requests), online status that distinguishes Offline, Online, and In a world, toast notifications, and privacy toggles for who can send requests and see your availability. Chat gets a "Friends Only" mode controlled through your profile settings.
Music and audio
Six new background tracks by fingerspit: Memories, Ebb, Home, Shores, Nightly, plus biome-specific music for the sulfur caves. The new music disc "Bounce" (comparator output 8) generates in mineshaft minecart chests inside sulfur caves, which makes exploring them worth it even if you do not need the blocks.
Smaller gameplay changes worth knowing
- Beds now bounce entities at 75% of impact velocity, and there is a new
bouncegame event (vibration frequency 2) when entities hit bouncy blocks or entities. - New advancements: "Uh Oh" (let a sulfur cube absorb TNT) and "Adventuring Time" now requires visiting a sulfur cave.
- Wandering traders can sell sulfur spikes, so you can get the new blocks without finding a cave.
- Peaceful difficulty now spawns ocelots, piglins, and zombie horses.
- Particles no longer vanish wholesale when the particle limit is hit; the game randomly skips rendering some instead.
For technical players
- New entity attributes:
bounciness(0.0-1.0),air_drag_modifier,friction_modifier, plus name-tag and below-name render distance attributes. Combined with the sulfur cube archetypes, there is a new physics toolbox to explore; expect contraption metas to form around it. - Commands:
/unpublishcloses your open-to-LAN integrated server;/execute on ownernow treats vexes as owned by their evoker; team colors are lowercase-only. - Server properties: chat and command spam thresholds are now separate (
chat-spam-threshold-seconds,command-spam-threshold-seconds, default 10, 0 to disable). - Pack formats: resource packs jump to 88.0 and data packs to 107.1, so packs and mods need updates for 26.2. If you run Fabric, our Fabric installation guide covers the loader side; check each mod's page for a 26.2 build before updating a survival world.
- World generation internals: dripstone features were renamed to "speleothem" and made more configurable, and there are new density and feature types for data pack authors. Our world generation explainer covers how these layers fit together.
Should you update your world?
For vanilla players: yes. The update is additive, and sulfur caves only generate in new chunks, so explore outward to find them in an existing world. For modded players: wait until your core mods publish 26.2 builds (the pack format bump means everything needs an update), and back up the world first, as always.
FAQ
When did Minecraft 26.2 come out?
Java Edition 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" released on June 16, 2026. On Bedrock the same drop shipped as version 26.30.
What is the biggest feature in Minecraft 26.2?
The sulfur caves biome: a new underground biome with sulfur and cinnabar block families, geysers, noxious gas pools, and the new sulfur cube mob. See the sulfur caves guide for the full tour.
Does Minecraft 26.2 improve FPS?
Not by default. The interesting change is the experimental Vulkan renderer you can opt into under Video Settings. It is a foundation for future performance work rather than a guaranteed FPS boost today; our Vulkan guide explains how to try it safely.
Do sulfur caves generate in old worlds?
Only in newly generated chunks. Travel beyond the terrain you have already explored and watch the surface for geysers and sulfur springs, which mark a sulfur cave below.
Do my mods work on 26.2?
Both pack formats changed (resource 88.0, data 107.1), so mods and packs need 26.2 builds. Check each mod's page for an updated release before migrating a world you care about.
